What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that is highly effective for individuals who experience intense emotions and struggle with behavioral control. It is built upon a foundation of teaching four key skill sets: core mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. The primary goal of DBT is to help you build a life you experience as meaningful and worth living.

Your DBT Path to Wellness

Initial Consultation and Assessment

Your first step is a comprehensive assessment with one of our licensed therapists. During this session, we will discuss your history, current challenges, and what you hope to achieve. This allows us to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.

You will meet regularly for individual psychotherapy sessions. These one-on-one meetings focus on enhancing your motivation and applying the dbt skills you are learning to specific challenges in your life. This is where you and your therapist work together to solve problems and maintain progress.

A core component of dbt is group therapy. In these sessions, you will learn and practice the four main dbt skills modules in a supportive setting with peers. The group format provides an opportunity to learn from others’ experiences and practice new interpersonal skills.

Dbt is focused on practical application in your daily life. Your therapist will help you generalize the skills learned in sessions to real-world situations. This focus ensures you are equipped to handle emotional crises and build healthier behavioral patterns outside of the therapy office.
